Kathy Deitch, a performer whose Broadway credits include the original companies of Wicked and Footloose and whose film and television work includes Steven Spielberg’s recent Disclosure Day and a recurring role on Law & Order, recently visited Central High School, where she led a hands-on workshop in the art of auditioning for the Valley Stream Central High School District’s Districtwide Performing Arts students.
Deitch walked students through practical audition techniques, exploring how to enter an audition space with confidence, communicate effectively, recover from mistakes, and let their individuality come through in their work. Students got the chance to apply real-time tips on preparation, presentation and performance directly under her guidance, and several performed for Deitch individually to receive personalized feedback. The workshop came just as students were preparing to audition for their own fall musical.
Deitch has spent years running audition workshops for young performers around the country, working with students through programs at institutions including Wagner College, UCLA, Pace University and the University of Hartford.
“What made this experience meaningful was watching our students see how many elements come together to create a strong performance,” said District Director of Fine & Performing Arts Monique Retzlaff. “Kathy worked with them on preparation, presence, intention, and how they communicate what they are singing. It gave our students a different lens through which to look at their own performance. Experiences like this build upon the work already happening in our classrooms and give students another perspective as they continue to grow as performers.”
The event was organized by Performing Arts Lead Teacher Kristin Martine as part of the program’s ongoing effort to connect students with working professionals in the arts.
