VS South High School Occupational Educational Honor Society and History Honor Society Students Pay Tribute to Veterans

November 17, 2021

Valley Stream, NY (November 2021)— Veterans Day is a day in which those who have served this country are acknowledged and celebrated for their heroism and bravery. The Occupational Educational Honor Society of South High School recognized and honored Veterans for their service to our country by creating photo displays of veterans throughout the halls of the high school. The photos used for the tribute were provided by students and faculty members who have loved ones or friends who served in the armed forces.

“It’s very important to recognize our heroes. Almost all of us have a family member, a friend or know of someone who has served in the military,” said Ms. Maureen Henry, Principal of Valley Stream South High School. “Creating these visual displays is our way of showing our respect and appreciation for their sacrifices and bravery in defense of the freedoms we all enjoy in this country.”

Joining the Occupational Educational Honor Society in crafting the visual homage to Veterans Day was South High School’s History Honor Society, whose members donated American flags. The flags were placed on every classroom door and office, as well as on the grounds surrounding the building to create a moving display that reminded everyone entering or leaving South High School of the importance and meaning of Veterans Day.

“The Honor Societies’ members’ hopes as they hung the flags throughout the building and outside was to have everyone stop, even for a moment, and have gratitude for all those who have fought for our freedoms,” said Ms. Rosanna Ali, Occupational Educational Honor Society Advisor. “If you were a student, someone who had reason to visit South High School, or simply drove past our building anytime during the week leading up to Veterans Day, I am sure the work these students put in had the intended impact on you.”
