On Thursday, April 27, 8th graders at Valley Stream North High School were visited by JRose, a professional spoken word poet. Students spent two periods with JRose writing and sharing poetry.
Born and raised in Queens but with family ties to Valley Stream North, JRose writes poetry that covers a wide range of topics, including mental health, women’s empowerment, love, and more. North’s English Department arranged and hosted the event and provided a safe and comfortable environment in which students were excited to write and perform their original works. The event served as a culmination of the school’s celebration of National Poetry Month.
”Our students blew us away with their level of engagement and their willingness to share and take risks,” Said English Department Chairperson Lori Belbol.
