Valley Stream, NY (December 2021)—Last month, the students in Valley Stream Central High School’s Creative Writing and AP art classes were treated to a special event hosted by Dolores Ayuso, Valley Stream Central High School’s Library Media Specialist. Students gathered in the library to virtually attend a live FlipGrid Event with Amanda Gorman, the famous poet, activist, and bestselling author; and Loren Long, The New York Times bestselling illustrator.
“I want to commend Mrs. Ayuso for virtually bringing two talented people into our library and exposing our students to the beauty of language and creative expression, said Dr. Joseph Pompilio. “Central students were totally engaged in the experience and left the library inspired."
Students were able to listen to Ms. Gorman and Ms. Long talk about their new book, Change Sings, which celebrates how anything is possible when voices are joined together. Students heard Ms. Gorman deliver a live reading, got an inside look at Ms. Long’s illustration process, and listened as the two discussed how they became who they are today.
FlipGrid is a tool used by educators to engage students by posting questions and having students reply by posting their video responses.
