Valley Stream, NEW YORK (March, 2022)—It was a week of celebrating the beautiful diversity of world languages at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School during their recent World Languages Week.
During the week of March 7, the entrance and second floor of the building were decorated with flags from around the world, while the hallway outside the cafeteria was adorned with a mural of hands created by students to represent the various cultures at the school.
Each day, loudspeaker announcements were made in the different languages taught at the school and used in the students’ homes. In their respective French, Italian and Spanish language classes, students used the app Blooket to test their comprehension of the language and culture.
Additionally, the students engaged in an after-school spelling bee held in French, Italian and Spanish on Thursday, with prizes for both the participants and winners.
On Friday, music from different countries was played in the hallways during the change of periods and a video celebrating the diverse backgrounds of so many at Memorial was broadcast for students and faculty during class. The festivities were brought together through the school’s World Language Department, which looks to celebrate the school’s diversity every year.
