South High School students Isabella Murphy, Adelynn Espinal, and Naomi Castǎng were recently recognized with the Character Leadership Award, presented in partnership with the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB.) The award honors students who have demonstrated outstanding character, leadership, and kindness.
Faculty members nominated students throughout the first half of the school year, with a committee reviewing nominations and selecting the three honorees. South speech pathologist and Character Education advisor, Beth Swedarsky, spearheaded the partnership along with LICAB founder and executive director, Joe Salamone.
Isabella was nominated for including a Life Skills student in her cheerleading routine during a Challenger Basketball Game. When the student expressed interest in participating, Isabella took time to teach the steps, share her pom-poms, and ensure the student felt fully welcomed. In a heartwarming moment, that student joined in presenting Isabella with her award.
Adelynn demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship during a basketball game when she stopped playing to help an opposing player who had tripped and fallen, putting another student’s well-being ahead of the game. Her compassion was recognized by opponents, referees, and coaches, and she was later named team captain.
Naomi was recognized for quietly comforting a student with a disability during the Class of 2026 group photo. After the student was guided back into place, Naomi offered her hand, providing comfort and reassurance throughout the event.
The three honorees will attend an end-of-year breakfast celebration with their families and future award recipients.
