Four students from Valley Stream South High School have advanced to Round Two of the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair. Students from Central and North participated in the event as well, and all involved represented the district with excellent projects.
Now seniors and juniors, the South students that advanced each worked with teachers Jeffrey Hsi and Melissa Torregrosa since the start of their sophomore year. Abdullah Ali presented a project titled “Flammability and Water Absorption of Banana Stem Fiber Reinforced Green Composites,” while Mahnoor Ayaz conducted research on how “Curcumin mitigates the Detrimental Effects of Nicotine in a Drosophila Melanogaster Model of Diabetes.” Evan Miller rsearched “Protein X: A Novel Protein in Enhancing Anti PD-1 and Treating Cancer,” and Nabiha Subzwari’s studies focused on “Identifying Functional Disease Drivers in Lupus Nephritis Associated with Glomerular Remodeling.”
