South Student Recognized in Statewide Art Contest

June 23, 2026

South High School student Michael Marshall has earned a New York State PTA Reflections Merit Award in Visual Arts, advancing beyond both the county and regional levels of competition for his original art entry.

The PTA Reflections program is a nationally recognized arts initiative that has been celebrating student creativity for over 50 years. Each year, students create original works of art inspired by a specific theme. This year’s theme is “I Belong!” Participants may enter in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. Entries are judged based on three criteria: interpretation of the theme, creativity, and technical skill.

Advancing from the local level to county, then to region, and finally earning recognition at the New York State level is a significant accomplishment and places Michael among an outstanding group of student-artists from across the state.

Michael worked closely with South High School art teacher Jenna Petikas throughout the process, whose encouragement and support helped guide him in bringing his artistic vision to life.

“We are incredibly proud of Michael and this well-deserved recognition,” said Monique Retzlaff, Director of Fine & Performing Arts. “The arts provide students with a powerful way to express themselves, tell their stories, and connect with others. Michael’s achievement is a beautiful reflection of his creativity, dedication, and the meaningful support provided by the educators who help nurture and encourage our students each day.”
