District Wide Emergency Information

Emergency Drill:

Once a year all students are released earlier than their regularly scheduled dismissal time in order to test the response of the District’s Emergency Management Plan. This mandatory “go home” drill is held in compliance with New York State Education Commissioner’s Regulations Section 155.13 (School Emergency Management Plan). Parents are notified well in advance of the date of the drill so they can make the appropriate arrangements.

Delayed School Opening and Closing Procedures:

When school closing conditions exist, the Valley Stream elementary and secondary school Superintendents of Schools will make a decision before 6 a.m. whether school will be closed or subject to a delayed opening and the Districts will broadcast the information on radio and cable television stations, on the District’s website and through various school telephone chains.

In cases of delayed opening, which would occur if more time is needed to clear the school parking lots, or if the weather forecast calls for the snowfall to end in the morning, the school day would begin later than the usual time. Central, North, South High School and Memorial Junior High staff members would report at 9:30 a.m. and students would report for a 10 a.m. school day start.  The high school district would follow a revised time schedule of shortened class periods, going from Period 1 (10 – 10:28 a.m.) to Period 9 (2:19 – 2:47 p.m.) as listed in the chart below.

If there is a decision to close the schools after the delayed opening announcement, that decision will be made by 7:30 a.m. A second telephone chain would go out, and updated information would be supplied to the radio and cable television stations, as well as the District Website.
