North’s Future Teachers Club Takes a Trip to College

May 6, 2024

Valley Stream North High School’s Future Teachers Club recently took a trip to the prestigious Teachers College at Columbia University, one of the nation’s top graduate schools in the education field. The visit gave these potential future teachers first-hand knowledge of what it is like to pursue a higher degree in education.

The Future Teachers Club is made up of North students who are exploring the idea of pursuing a career in education, whether as a teacher, administrator, social worker, professor or psychologist. The club gives the students the opportunity to interact with some of the top local professionals in the field, and discuss the ins and outs of the education field.

As a graduate school, Teachers College doesn’t typically give tours to high school students, but the school made an exception for North’s Future Teachers Club. The group toured the classrooms where students learn to teach in the various subject areas, including some of the newer specializations in the technology field for primary and secondary school teachers, such as coding and the sociology of video games. The North students also learned about the resources available at the college for selecting and earning certifications, and looking for jobs after graduation.

“The Future Teacher Club’s field trip was an informative and helpful experience to learn more about the campus, the classes they offer for subjects you might want to teach, and how students’ schedule look throughout the day,” said student Jeselys Vazquez.

“This field trip was definitely a great opportunity for all of us,” said student Alisson Andrea Alas Bonilla. “Getting to learn about the classes and opportunities available was a great learning experience. I never expected to tour such a prestigious institution during my high school career and I’m forever grateful we were able to take this trip.”

It was a rare opportunity to tour the hallways of the storied institution.

The North students also had the opportunity to learn about the various resources the graduate school has to guide them through their career interests and find jobs after graduation.
