North Students Prepare for Poetry Out Loud Competition

January 13, 2022

Valley Stream, NEW YORK (December, 2021) — Valley Stream North High School students had the opportunity to flex their lyrical muscles this December, as they prepared for their annual Poetry Out Loud competition in January. Poetry Out Loud is a national program that encourages the study of poetry by offering free educational materials and a recitation competition for high school students across the country. The program aims to help students gain public speaking skills and self confidence while learning about the literary arts.

Over the course of a three-session workshop led by Poetry Out Loud teaching artist Breezy Janae, the students read and listened to poetry and wrote and shared some of their own original poems. North High School’s workshop, which was held virtually, was organized by teacher Sofia Owen and English Department Chairperson Lori Belbol. The school’s Poetry Out Loud Competition took place in the school cafeteria on January 6.
