North Students Get a Lesson on Distracted, Impaired Driving

April 12, 2024

Valley Stream North High School recently hosted the Save a Life Tour, a powerful lesson about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. The program utilized virtual reality simulators to demonstrate how difficult it is to drive while distracted or impaired.

More than 200 North juniors and seniors signed up to take part, which was hosted by the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club. Students put on virtual reality headsets, sat in driving simulators and attempted to drive under a series of challenging scenarios. The scenarios included simulations on what it would be like to drive while under the influence of alcohol and drug use, as well as others where students were tasked with driving while texting or contending with distracting passenger activity. Save a Life Tour representatives also gave presentations demonstrating some of the deadly accidents that can occur when driving distracted or impaired.

“The experience was amazing and fun, but also made me be more aware of the dangers of driving under the influence and texting while driving,” said North junior Sophia Songveeratham. “The simulators were an amazing perspective into what it is like to drive unsafely. As a new driver myself, I now know the dangers that can affect me, but also other drivers and pedestrians around me.”

North’s SADD Club advisor is Mr. Moniaci.
