Valley Stream, NEW YORK (January 2022) — Valley Stream North’s Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society raised a record $1,800 for veterans this holiday season via its annual candy cane gram fundraiser.
As part of the fundraiser, students and teachers purchased a holiday message and candy cane to send to one another at $1 apiece, and recipients came to pick them up outside the entrance of the school at the conclusion of the sale. Funds raised from the event will go to Honor Flight Long Island, a nonprofit that helps veterans travel to war monuments in Washington D.C.; the Northport VA Hospital; and the Angelo S. Auletta Scholarship, which is named for the World War II veteran father of a North teacher and awarded annually to a senior at the school.
This is the seventh year North’s social studies honor society has raised funds for veterans. It kicked off on December 7, with a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, according to North Social Studies Chairperson Mary Parisi.
“We want to instill in today’s young people the sacrifices made by those who came before them and the freedoms we enjoy today because of those sacrifices,” Ms. Parisi said. “I am extremely proud of Rho Kappa and the North students who helped make this fundraiser a success.”
