North Junior Student Council, STOP Club ‘Adopt’ Local Families for the Holidays

January 30, 2023

Continuing an annual tradition, members of North High School’s Spartans Taking on Problems (STOP) Club and the Junior High Student Council worked together this holiday season to “adopt” local families in need.

As part of this team effort, North school psychologist Melissa Byrne and school social worker Elizabeth Sykes, who serve as co-advisors for the student council, identified local families who might be struggling during the holiday season and helped pinpoint their specific needs. Then, the council joined with the STOP Club to gather donations, including gift cards to buy groceries. North’s STOP Club is dedicated to improving the local community by providing support to underserved groups and individuals. It is led by advisor Catherine Modzelewski.

Once the generous donations from the wider North community were collected, members of the two student groups met to wrap presents and create holiday cards for the families. This holiday season, the effort provided support to 13 local families. This is the third year the North community has worked together to make the holidays a little easier for these families in need, and it is fast becoming a proud North holiday tradition.
