Valley Stream, NEW YORK (February, 2022)—In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, the National Honor societies at Valley Stream North High School joined forces to serve others and give back to their community for North’s inaugural Service Week.
“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve," goes the famous Dr. King quote. Throughout the week of January 17, North students put Dr. King’s powerful words into action. They donated, volunteered, wrote cards, gave gifts and dedicated their time to various groups to show how easy it can be to perform simple yet meaningful acts for others. On Tuesday, students focused their service energies on health-care workers; on Wednesday, the elderly; on Thursday, children; and on Friday, people with disabilities. Additionally, the students wore a different color each day to correspond with the groups they were supporting.
“We are so proud of our North students for really embracing the spirit of our first VSN Week of Service,” said North Honor Society Advisor Lori Belbol. “Students creatively approached the theme of each day, found themselves helping family members and neighbors, and reaching out to those in various fields to thank them for their service. Our goal was to show students how easy it can be to do simple yet meaningful tasks that could mean the world to someone else!”
