Valley Stream North High School senior Hannah Lee has been named a National Merit Scholarship finalist. In addition to earning this prestigious accomplishment, Hannah is also North’s valedictorian for the 2022-2023 school year.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) seeks to identify academically talented students throughout the United States. Of the roughly 1.5 million students who apply for the program each year, Hannah is one of only 15,000 to be named finalists. The NMSC determines finalists and, ultimately, the winners of the annual scholarships based on students’ academic records, PSAT/NMSQT scores, written recommendations, information about the students’ activities and leadership skills, and an essay submitted by the finalist.
“Ambitious, meticulous, and passionate—these words truly describe the type of young woman Hannah Lee is,” said North Principal Robin Small. “Hannah works for excellence, paying close attention to every detail. She strives to overcome barriers presented to her to achieve success. She always looks out for those around her, building connections with teachers and peers whenever possible.”
Throughout her academic career, Hannah has enrolled in the most challenging courses offered at North. During her senior year alone, she enrolled in AP English Literature, AP US Government and Politics, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus BC and AP Spanish Language courses.
