Valley Stream North High School AP Capstone students have been named winners of a $1,000 Promising STEM Innovation Award in the prestigious national Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition.
The Valley Stream students’ project, a STEM-based plan to improve recycling awareness and systems within the school, stood out among entries from all 50 U.S. states. The proposal outlined a student-led initiative beginning with a waste audit to identify recycling challenges, followed by the design and pilot of a clear, easy-to-use recycling system in the school lunchroom. The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable model that can expand throughout the entire building, leveraging data collection and problem-solving skills to effect tangible boost to efficiency. The award grant will be administered through DonorsChoose, providing resources to further the project’s development. While the team was not selected to advance as semi-finalists, the recognition at the national level highlights the quality of STEM education and student-driven inquiry at Valley Stream North High School.
