Memorial Students Compete in Science Olympiad

Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team recently competed at the western Long Island Regional Finals. Eleven students participated, and the competition took place at Kellenberg Memorial High School under the supervision of Ms. Vinita Singh and Ms. Theresa Iadevaio.

“The dedication and hard work ethic of our students was shown clearly during their time at the Long Island Regional Finals,” said Memorial Junior High School Principal, Bret Strauss. “As the smallest team competing for the first time against 42 other teams, our students were able to achieve great success throughout the various events.”

The Science Olympiad is a competition that provides standard-based challenges focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Over 6,000 middle school and high school students from all 50 states compete in the tournament each year. This year, Memorial Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team consisted of participants from 7th and 8th grade.

Among the students who took part, Mishaal Hammad and Hala Alhayek took home second place in the anatomy and physiology category and fifth place in the rocks and minerals category. Additionally, Mishaal and Sauliha Ahmed took home third place in the green generation category. Other students who competed include:
