Students from Ms. Jamshad, Ms. Hogan, and Mr. Wong’s art classes at Memorial Junior High School recently showcased their creativity and imagination in the Huntington Arts Council’s annual Nightmare on Main Street art competition. The exhibition, which runs from October 21 to November 16, 2025, features artwork by students in grades 6-12 from various school districts across Long Island. The students who have their works on display are: Mohib Waseem, Nailiah Harvey-Otero, Jennifer Sukhram, Sarah Latham-Funn, and Preston Booker.
This year’s competition was juried by Isabella Fernanda, a New York-based artist. Students were challenged to create artwork inspired by her thematic prompt, which asked, “What’s your scary story?” The juror encouraged young artists to use narrative art to explore how fear can disguise itself as nightmares, themes of death, or the unknown, citing influences from artists like Frida Kahlo and stories such as Frankenstein and Dracula.
The talented Memorial artists crafted chilling yet expressive pieces that explored themes of fear, storytelling, and emotion through visual art. Their work translated spooky imagery and personal scary stories into compelling artworks, wowing judges and visitors alike.
An opening reception for the exhibition was held on October 24 at the Main Street Gallery in Huntington. Congratulations to all the winners and participants from Memorial Junior High School for their amazing work!
