Memorial Step Team Steps Up to Spread Smiles

February 3, 2023

Members of Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School’s step team took part in a service project to create and deliver Smile Bags to local hospitalized children in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The student, under advisor Shelida Lee, alongside a handful of teachers, decorated a series of brown paper bags and filled them with coloring books, crayons, play doh and stickers. Then, in partnership with Molloy University, the bags were donated to children staying at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in the hope of bringing them a little bit of joy in a difficult time.

The students, along with some staff, decorated the bags with inspirational messages and filled them with tokens in the hope of bringing a little bit of joy in a difficult time.

“The outcome of beauty was beyond anything I could’ve imagined, and I think the recipients will treasure them for quite some time,” Ms. Lee said. “Our participation could not have been possible without the support of the Memorial family—who truly went above and beyond.”

Ms. Lee added that she hopes this event becomes an annual partnership with Molloy University to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
