The Memorial Junior High School commenced a new club this year through a run/walk kickoff event. The club, Students Committed to Social Justice, was initiated by Mrs. Laura Mesa and Memorial alumni Solomon Akaeze. Solomon serves as the club president and is currently a sophomore at Central High School.
The run/walk event came about through club discussions on various social justice topics, with the theme dubbed as “We ALL Run/Walk on EQUAL Ground.” This was also in honor of Ahmaud Arbery, who was killed doing his daily jog/run on Feb. 23, 2020. The students wore masks, were socially distant and ran or walked 2:23 miles around the Memorial track in his honor.
SCSJ is a club where students meet virtually (this school year) and have discussions regarding issues involving social injustices, social inequalities, ethnicity, race and other social topics. This is a safe space where students come to share experiences, beliefs and have discussions with their peers regarding these issues in a productive way.
