Memorial Junior High School educators showcased their innovative teaching practices at the annual New York State Middle School Association Conference, held on Jan. 10, at St. Joseph’s University in Patchogue.
Math teachers Ms. Leftwich and Ms. Peace, alongside English teachers Ms. Andrews and Mr. Alvarenga, presented their implementation of 14 teaching strategies designed to enhance learning, inspired by the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl. They were joined by Valley Stream Central High School District administrators, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Wayne Loper and Memorial Principal Bret Strauss.
The presentation highlighted how these strategies, initially tailored for mathematics, have been adapted across multiple content areas to foster critical thinking and active student engagement. By integrating these approaches into their classrooms, the teachers have created dynamic learning environments that encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and deeper understanding among students.
Educators from across Long Island had the opportunity to learn from Memorial’s teaching team during the conference. The session served as a valuable platform to exchange ideas and discuss best practices with peers dedicated to advancing middle school education.
