Central’s Athletes Helping Athletes Club Visits Wheeler Avenue

January 19, 2023

Twenty-Nine distinguished student athletes from Valley Stream Central High School visited the 6th grade class at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School this December as part of Central’s Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) club. Through AHA, Central juniors and seniors visit their younger peers at elementary schools throughout the neighborhood, connect with them, and advise them on how to make good decisions—both on the field and in the classroom.

As part of the visit, each club member was assigned to a class, in which they introduced themselves and explained the purpose of AHA. The high schoolers shared personal stories about themselves, including  how the mistakes they have made and lessons they have learned have shaped them into the better leaders and athletes they are today. Then, the Wheeler classes took part in fun, interactive icebreakers, during which they shared positive things about themselves and got to know one another better.

Central’s AHA members expressed excitement about the visit and their ability to guide younger students using their very own experiences. The AHA club will have two more visits this school year to touch upon more serious topics such as sportsmanship, character, vaping, drugs and alcohol.
