Central Student Honored for Hofstra Shakespeare Festival Performance

January 30, 2023

Central High School 11th grader Marializ Lopez was honored with the Best Performance award at Hosftra University’s annual Shakespeare Festival this fall. She was recognized for her portrayal of the character Lavinia in select scenes from Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, performing alongside her peers in the Valley Stream Central High School District Performing Arts Program.

“The Hofstra Shakespeare Festival is an event we’ve participated in yearly, with the exception of the past two Covid years,” said Elizabeth Kott, head of the VSCHSD Performing Arts Program. “We were so excited to be able to go back to Hofstra and have the opportunity to not only perform on their gorgeous stage, but to be adjudicated and receive feedback from college professors. We are already thinking about what scene to take next year!”

Along with the award, Marializ earned a $1,500- per- year scholarship to Hofstra, should she decide to continue her drama career at the university after high school.
