Central Student Attends Prestigious Leadership Institute

May 6, 2024

Valley Stream Central High School student Kayleen Wingson recently attended the prestigious Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute in Albany. The institute encourages participation of Latino students in the political process, and gives them the opportunity to witness and learn about legislative proceedings while at the state Capitol.

The institute spanned three days. Participants identified and studied local issues, and learned about the state legislative process as well as Capitol parliamentary procedures on select bills. Around 200 students from eight delegations statewide participated, and they took part in team-building exercises, a mock Assembly session—which took place in the Capitol Assembly chamber—and a series of career development workshops.

In addition to the Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, Kayleen has participated in the APSPIRA program for Hispanic youth leadership and a BOCES leadership program. Kayleen said she was inspired by her visit to Albany to pursue leadership and advocacy positions.

“I represent a small percentage of Latino young adults, young women who even consider college education,” she said. “This experience has motivated me to pursue a career in law because I strongly believe that I have the responsibility to document, research, and voice the world’s stories that others will not tell.”

Kayleen spent a weekend at the state Capitol as part of the institute.
