Valley Stream, NEW YORK (March, 2022)—Members of Valley Stream Central High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) club started off their second semester with a visit to sixth graders at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School.
Through the club, the distinguished athletes connect with their younger peers to advise them on how to make smart decisions—both on and off the field. During their latest visit, club members were assigned to a Wheeler class to explain the purpose of Athletes Helping Athletes. The upperclassmen began by sharing personal stories about how sportsmanship has played a role in various aspects of their lives and explained how the lessons that they’ve learned as athletes have shaped them into the leaders that they are today. After, the Wheeler students were given scenarios and created solutions to problems that they could potentially encounter both in their athletic careers and their lives outside of sports.
It was the second visit Central’s AHA members paid to the students at Wheeler this school year, and they were excited to have the opportunity to guide younger students using their very own experiences.
The club plans to visit the Wheeler students once more this school year, when they will touch upon more serious topics such as bullying, drugs and alcohol.
