Three teams of juniors and seniors from the Valley Stream Central High School District received a total of $4,500 in awards in the “virtual” Northwell Health Spark! Challenge on April 2. Due to the present circumstances, this year’s competition was changed from a live presentation to a video submission. Students rose to the challenge of collaborating remotely to develop successful projects based on specific areas of the medical field.
Representing South, a group comprised of juniors Sahir Ahmed, Abdullah Ali, Sreeya Bobby, Brandon Goorsammy, Justin Ocampo, Amrit Pabla, Kalina Palas, and Ameena Qadri collaborated with the Zucker Hillside Hospital Department of Ambulatory Psychiatric Rehabilitation throughout the year to create a brochure, video presentation and poster board about how to encourage students to utilize their school’s support services in order to support their mental health. They worked with doctors and administrators from Northwell Health as well as the members of the district’s Pupil Personnel Services department and were awarded $1,000 for their video, which can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoY9lOUYXd4&feature=youtu.be.
South’s senior team members, Abubakr Ahmad, Mahnoor Ayaz, Sofia Gaston, Maegan Lewis, Zeeshan Memon, Evan Miller, Manal Moid, Jesse Orozco, Nabiha Subzwari, Uche Ugbor, and Faith Vale, collaborated with doctors from Northwell Health’s Department of Family Medicine. They were awarded $2,500 for the video and poster they created. This team cleverly created a game for doctors in training called PokeDoc! The doctors would engage virtually in a fun way to problem solve their patients’ symptoms and diagnose them. Aleena Uddin, Melissa Ramkissoon, Maryam Bacchus, Rossy Gavilano, Maliha Azam and Jordan Washington received a $1,000 prize for their video. They partnered with Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Perioperative Services and focused on the role of the robotic coordinator in minimally invasive surgeries.
