Student Government


Senior High Student Council

Meeting Day: Wednesday  Time: 3:00  Room:225  Advisor: Ehrlich
The Senior High Student Council is an elected body that serves as a liaison between students and the administration.  In addition, the Senior High Student Council is responsible for coordinating many after school and extra-curricular events including Pep Rally, King and Queen Contest, Homecoming Day Celebration, Battle of the Grades, Class Acts, Talent Show, food drive and other charitable events.Open to Grades: 10th - 12th Grade

NOTE: All Senior High Student Council officers and 10th-12th grade council officers must attend Senior High Student Council meetings. Other interested students in grades 10-12 are welcome

 

Junior High Student Council

Meeting Day: Friday  Time: 3pm  Room: 118  Advisor: Barbera The Junior High Student Council is an organization comprised of non-elected and elected members.  The organization serves as a liaison between junior high students and the administration. In addition, Junior High Student Council coordinates the 7th Grade Welcoming Event, Halloween Happening, Junior High Competition/Sports Challenge, and other events.  The organization participates in welcoming the new 7th graders at the Summer Orientation in order to help incoming 7th grade students assimilate into their new learning environment and to inform and involve students in school functions.   NOTE:  All Junior High Student Council officers and 7th - 9th grade council officers must attend Junior High Student Council meetings.  Other students in grades 7 - 9 are welcome and encouraged to attend.  


Grade Councils

General Description - Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, yearly elections for grade officers are held. Grade council officers and council members are responsible for planning activities, social events, fundraisers and community service projects.  Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade

Class Dues: To help offset the expense of class activities and events, each student is asked to pay dues. The dues structure is as follows:

7th Grade $3.00   8th Grade $4.00   9th Grade $5.00   10th Grade $6.00   11th Grade $7.00
12th Grade $8.00

Honor Societies

Career and Technical Education Honor Society

Meeting Day: Wednesday as needed  Time: 3pm  Room:  101 Advisors: Coppeto
CTE Honor Society is a service and honorary organization for students with exemplary achievement in Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Technology Education.  Activities include special projects which help meet the needs of the North High community and field trips exploring careers in related fields.

LOTE Honor Society

Meeting Day: Thursday  Time: 3:15 Room: 205  Advisor: Milazzo
LOTE Honor Society is a service organization which helps meet the needs of the North High community.  Activities include tutoring students who need extra help in language.  Open to Grades: 10th – 12th Grade, by invitation only
  

National Honor Society

Meeting Day: Wednesday as needed  Time: 3pm  Room: Library   Advisor: Hirsch
The National Honor Society is one of the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school students.  Applications are provided to juniors and seniors with a minimum 90% cumulative average. Selections are made by a faculty evaluation committee where leadership, character and service are considered and evaluated through a review of each student’s documented service and extracurricular activities. Once inducted, students must adhere to the NHS principles, attend periodic meetings, participate in a community service project, and offer assistance at school activities/fundraisers upon request.  Open to Grades: 11th - 12th Grade, by invitation only

National Junior Honor Society

Meeting Day: Monday Time: 3:15   Room: 121 Advisor: Bennett

Applications are provided to eighth and ninth grade students with a minimum 90% cumulative average. Students are selected for induction in the spring and continue participation until the completion of tenth grade.  Selections are made by a faculty evaluation committee where leadership, character and service are considered and evaluated through a review of each student’s documented service and extracurricular activities. Once inducted, students must adhere to the NJHS principles, attend periodic meetings, and offer assistance at school activities/fundraisers upon request.

Math/Science Honor Society

Math/Science Honor Society is a service organization which helps meet the needs of the North High community.  Activities include community service, tutoring students who need extra help in science and math, and participation in charity fundraisers.  Open to Grades: 10th - 12th Grade.  By qualifying application only.



Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society

Meeting Day: Thursday as needed Time: 3:15   Room: 304   Advisor: Ms. Parisi
Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. Besides a love of history, eligible students must have a 90 average or better in two full-year Social Studies classes as well as a score of 85 or better on either the Global or U.S. History Regents exam. Rho Kappa participants assist with Social Studies fundraisers as well as provide tutoring for any student struggling in Social Studies. By qualifying application only.

Service Clubs

A World of Difference (AWOD)/Students to Oppose Prejudice (STOP)

Meeting Day: 2 Thursdays per month  Time: 3:15 Room: 237  Advisor: Modzelewski
The goal of this club is to help students understand their rights and the rights of others and to help them develop concern for the well-being and dignity of all.  Club activities are planned by North students to help us all appreciate the diversity of our school and community.

Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)

Meeting Day: Thursday  Time: 3:15 PM Room: 304   Advisor: Maier/Parisi
The purpose of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is to encourage acceptance and tolerance within the diverse population of our school, promote pride in our community, create a safe environment for all students of Valley Stream North High School, and educate the school community. The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) of Valley Stream North High School  works to foster an atmosphere of tolerance throughout VSN and will combat homophobia, discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation in all of its forms. The group strives to create a supportive group for all students. We strive to make Valley Stream North High School a caring, tolerant community for all of its students regardless of race, creed, nationality, physical disability and sexual orientation.

Interact Club

The Interact Club is an outgrowth of the Valley Stream Rotary Club.  Students will work for needy causes, providing service on a local, national and global level.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

Students Against Destructive Decisions works towards raising the awareness of the school community and the community-at-large about the issues of drinking and driving, drug and alcohol use, poor decision-making and issues impacting adolescents. Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade
  

Student Peer Organization (SPO)

Meeting Day:  Tuesday Time: 3:15PM  Room: 224   Advisor: Ehrlich
The Student Peer Organization is a select group of juniors and seniors that fosters positive relationships between older and younger students within our school and assists our incoming seventh graders through their first year in a high school setting.  Members are trained in problem solving techniques, decision-making activities and skills for group leadership.

Student Publications

North Star (Student Online Magazine)

NorthStar, Valley Stream North's student online magazine, provides students with opportunities to contribute to all components of the production and publication process.  Staff writers contribute articles and/or photos related to areas of interest such as news, entertainment , opinion, lifestye and sports for inclusion in the magazine.  Editors coordinate the publication of each issue through their participation in weekly meetings in addition to writing and editing of articles.
Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade
 

Yearbook (The Chariot)

Meeting Day: Every Day Time: 3:15-6pm Room: 200 Advisor: Orgel
Students create their own senior yearbook from cover to cover.  Students on the staff choose the theme and create an entire book based on that theme.  Students collect pictures, quotes and other materials from the senior class and transform them into an exciting, creative yearbook.  Students choose the layout for each page and use the publisher's program, as well as Photoshop.
Open to Grades: 11th - 12th grades through application and interview process.

Fine/Performing Arts

7:10 Downbeats

Meeting Day:  Monday/Wednesday Time: 7:10AM  Room: 311   Advisor:  Thorn
7:10 downbeats is a highly select vocal ensemble that specializes in modern a cappella music.  The group is limited to 24 students who are also members of 9-10 and Senior High Chorus.  Auditions are held in June for the following year.    Performances include school concerts, various school and public events, as well as participation in regional a cappella events.
Open to Grades: 9-12 Students who are enrolled in the Chorus program at North.  
Audition required.
 

Art Club

Involve students in both individual and school-wide art projects.

Breakfast Club String Ensemble

Meeting Day: Tuesday and Friday  Time: 7-7:45am Room: Orchestra Room  Advisor: Hayden
A select string instrument ensemble which carries out multiple performances throughout the year both in school and in the community during and after school hours.
Open to Grade: 9th – 12th Grades by audition only
 

Drama Troupe

To involve students in the production of plays on stage and behind the scenes.

Jazz Ensemble – Junior High

Meeting Day:  Tuesday/Thursday  Time: 7:00 am  Room:  Band Room  Advisor: Morris
The North Junior High Jazz Ensemble is open to band students able to perform on saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, bass guitar, guitar and drum set.  To meet instrumentation needs, students may need to audition for this ensemble.  The band concentrates on learning the fundamentals of jazz ensemble performance in a variety of musical styles.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to explore beginning jazz improvisation.

Jazz Band – Senior High

Introduction to Jazz ensemble literature and improvisation.

Spartan Steppers

Meeting Day: Monday  Time: 3:15 Room: 111 Advisor: López and West
The Step team is an additional extra-curricular activity for students. The team performs a unique dance art form that originated in Africa. During this percussive dance, the participants’ entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken works and handclaps. The team was formed to perform at school and community events throughout the school year, allowing members the opportunity to develop leadership, moral, social, physical and mental skills.

Theater Management (AV Club)

Meeting Day: Mon-Fri As Required Time: 3:15 Room: Cafeteria  Advisor: Holly
Theater Management seeks to involve students in the "behind-the-scenes" activities (lighting, sound, etc.) required for school productions. Students actively participate in the production-side of high-profile school events, while also learning the terms and devices often used in professional audio and visual scenarios.

Women's Choir

Meeting Day:  Tuesday/Thursday  Time: 7:10 am Room: 311  Advisor: Thorn
Women's Choir is a select vocal ensemble for 9th-12th grade girls who are members of 9-10 Chorus or Senior High Chorus.  Performances include school concerts, various school and public events, and field trips to local community centers.

Open to Grades: 9th - 12th Grade, Auditions for new members are held at the beginning of each school year.

ENL Academy

The ENL Academy provides ENL students with additional support in the content area subjects.  Activities include after school tutoring for students and night-time meetings for parents and students to highlight important scholastic information  Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade
 

Homework Center 'Success'

Meeting Day: Monday and Wednesday  Time: 3-4pm  Room: 227
Advisors: Moran/Larsen
The "Success" Homework Center is designed to assist junior high students who are struggling academically.  The tutors provide homework assistance, study skills and strategies, help with organizational skills and serve as mentors.
Open to Grades: 7th and 8th Grade
Some candidates are recommended by their Guidance Counselors and Teachers, but all are welcome.

 

It’s Academic

Is Jeopardy your forte? Come practice and prepare for regional competitions with other like-minded students. Sharpen your trivia skills and share your knowledge in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.   This trivia club is open to students in grades 7-12.  All you need is a love of knowledge!
