MARS EXPLORATION ROVERS AND MAESTRO
Explore Mars with Maestro -
NASA has released Maestro, a public version of
the primary software tool used by scientists to operate the Mars
Exploration Rovers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Anyone can
download Maestro for free from mars.telascience.org
and use it to follow along with the rovers' progress during the mission.
You can use Maestro to view pictures from Mars in 2D and 3D and create
simplified rover activity plans. During the mission, updates will be
released for Maestro containing the latest images from Mars. This
software tool gives amature scientists an unprecedented opportunity to
view telemetry recently downloaded from Mars. This tool is written
in Java (Attention! AP Comp
Sci students) so it requires a minimum 256MB of RAM and a 3D graphics
accelerator is highly recommended. I've installed Maestro on my
laptop with 128MB of RAM and low end 3D graphics acceleration and it is
extremely sluggish. Data updates, can be found here. If you
decide to try Maestro out, I would be happy to offer any individual
class time to share their discoveries with their class for some extra
credit. Have fun!
