Special Services

Special Education

The District operates special education programs in compliance with the Commissioner's Regulations, Part 200. Students eligible for these programs are reviewed and classified by the Committee on Special Education (CSE). This body evaluates children with potential disabilities, monitors those already designated as having a disability, and recommends appropriate placements to the Board of Education.

Special education programs operated in-District include resource rooms, inclusion and special classes. Students with special needs are placed in these facilities according to their IEP as developed by the CSE under state guidelines. Some classified students are in regular programs for most of the day and receive additional daily assistance from special education teachers. Other students with special needs are placed in special classes, where special education teachers instruct them in applicable academic subjects. Whenever appropriate, these students are mainstreamed into traditional classes.

Special education students whose IEP's demand out-of-District placement are instructed in Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) schools, or other appropriate out-of-District facilities.

Psychological Services

A staff of psychologists provides psychological services for District students. One psychologist is assigned to each building. Diagnostic and consultation services are available to students with emotional, learning or behavioral problems, as well as to children with special needs. Students are referred to these services primarily through guidance counselors, teachers, and school administrators. Parents may also request these services. In addition, the psychologists provide group counseling for students in special education classes.

Other Services

Where the need arises, the District provides social workers offering education intervention and prevention programs related to drug and alcohol abuse, as well as home instruction for pupils unable to attend school for an extended period of time because of illness or accident.
