Valley Stream’s Summer Music Enrichment Program is underway, and a total of 220 students are honing their skills while learning and practicing various concepts. The five-week-long opportunity is attended by students in the Central High School District as well as the elementary districts and features the option of band, chorus or strings sessions.

Led by faculty members on weekday mornings, the program focuses on different techniques and genres as well as group collaboration. Students entering grades 7-12 participate in workshops at North High School, while fourth- through sixth-grade lessons are held at Willow, Shaw Avenue and Carbonaro elementary schools.

Additionally, music students and staff members have been sharing their talents with the community during the Summer Concert Series, which featured band and orchestra concerts in July and August. For the full schedule, visit

The Valley Stream Central High School District has appointed Dr. Jennifer DiMaio as the new director of instructional services. A member of the district since 2002, Dr. DiMaio most recently served as English as a new language/world language department chairperson at North High School. She is filling the responsibilities previously held by Christian Bowen, who was named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Dr. DiMaio completed her student teaching at Memorial Junior High School in the fall of 2001, then joined North as an English as a second language and Spanish teacher. In addition to her work in the classroom, she served as a softball and basketball coach, grade adviser, student activities director and the adviser to the ENL Academy. In 2016, she was appointed chairperson of the ENL department and a year later went on to lead the world language department, working with teachers from different content areas to develop best practices and instructional methods to reach diverse learners.

During her years in the world language department, the district successfully helped its English language learners attain high graduation rates, created partnerships between the school communities and families, and guided students in establishing postsecondary plans. This past year, the department implemented the New York State Seal of Biliteracy and awarded 19 deserving students with the honor at graduation, demonstrating their proficiency in two languages and cultures.

A third-generation graduate of Central High School, she has strong roots in the district and has been involved in school and districtwide professional development for many years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Boston University, a Master of Arts in teaching foreign language and ESL from New York University and a doctorate in educational administration from New York University.

“In my new position, I look forward to meeting and working with faculty, students and families across the district, and continuing to support the high levels of academic excellence that our district achieves each year,” Dr. DiMaio said.
